Soft Link Cowl

Check out February 19, 2026 blog post to see the cowl done in a solid yarn.

Yarn: One skein of Cascade 220 Superwash Merino, color: #1 cream or One skein of Bashful Armadillo Extra Fine Merino, color: “I Put a Spell on You”, or One skein of any worsted weight #4 yarn

Materials: US Size J/10 (6 mm) and K/10.5 (6.5mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, tape measure, stitch marker (Note: the 6.5 mm crochet hook is used for the beginning chain only)

Difficulty: Easy

Size: 24” (60.96 cm) around by 8” (20.32 cm) wide

Gauge: 14 Ldc x 10 rows = 4 inches (10.16 cm)

Abbreviations and Stitches (U.S. Terms): ch – chain, dc – double crochet, rep – repeat, rnd – round, sc – single crochet, st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches: Linked Double Crochet (Ldc): Insert hook into the middle bar of the previous stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through remaining 2 loops. Check out this Linked Double Crochet video by Kickin Crochet. No need to reinvent the wheel!

Notes: Ch 1 does not count as a stitch, ch 2 does not count as a stitch

The Cowl is crocheted in the round so you do not need to join rounds for this pattern or chain 1 at the beginning of each round, simply crochet in continuous rounds (put a stitch marker in the first st of each rnd, so I know where to begin and end)

To make the cowl longer increase the number of sts in the beginning ch and to make the cowl wider increase the number of rows completed.

Instructions:

Foundation Chain: Using the K/10.5 (6.5mm) crochet hook chain 84, join the last Ch to the first Ch with a Sl St, making sure not to twist your chain, switch to the J/10 (6 mm) and continue to Rnd 1

Rnd1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, do not join. (84 sc)

*put a stitch marker in the first sc

Rnd 2: Ch 2, insert hook into the 2nd ch from the hook and pull up a loop, insert hook into the next st, (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through remaining 2 loops (beg Ldc made), move the st marker to this st and the first st of each rnd, Ldc in each st around. (84 Ldc)

Rnds 3: Ldc in each st around. (84 Ldc)

Rnd 4-19: Rep Round 3

Rnd 20: Sc in each st around, join to beg sc, fasten off, weave in ends.
