Granny Square Mini Tote

Yarn: Scheepjes Catona size 2 cotton yarn (50g, 125m) Colors for tote 1: 75g of #105 Bridal White and 25g of #252 Watermelon, #412 Forest Green, #411 Sweet orange, #113 Delphinium, #516 Candy Apple.              Colors for tote 2: 75g of #110 Jet Black and 25g of #261 Capri Blue, #189 Royal Orange, #113 Delphinium, #516 Candy Apple, #411 Sweet orange. (if using a size 2 cotton yarn you will need use two strands held together) or any size 4 worsted weight cotton yarn. (worsted weight yarn will use a single strand.)

Materials: US Size I/9 (5.5 mm) and H/8 (5 mm) crochet hooks, yarn needle, scissors.

Difficulty: Easy 

Size: 9” (22.86 cm) x 9” (22.86 cm) not including handle

Stitch Guide:  ch(s) - chain(s), sc- single crochet, dc - double crochet, rep - repeat, Rnd - round, sl st - slip stitch,  st(s) - stitch(es)

Notes: The pattern is written in U.S. terms

The Mini Tote Bags in the photo were made with two strands of fingering weight cotton size 2 yarn held together or it can be done with one strand of size 4 worsted weight cotton yarn.

Instructions: Granny Squares (Make 2) (Each square is 8” (20.32 cm) x 8” (20.32 cm)

With two strands of size 2 yarn held together make a magic circle

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1 in the circle, * 3 dc, ch 1, repeat from * two more times, join to beginning ch 3, fasten off. (4 dc clusters, 4 ch-1 sps).

Rnd 2: Join new yarn to any ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp, (corner made), * ch 1, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next space, repeat from * two more times, ch 1,  join to beginning ch 3, fasten off. (8 dc clusters, 4 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-1 sps).

Rnd 3: Join new yarn to any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp, * ch 1, 3 dc, in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the ch 2 corner sp, repeat from * around, ch 1, join to beginning ch 3, fasten off.  (12 dc clusters, 4 ch-2 sps, 8 ch-1 sps).

Rnd 4: Join new yarn to any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp,  (ch 1, 3 dc, in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 2 times, * 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the ch 2 corner sp, (ch 1, 3 dc, in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 2 times, repeat from * around, join to beginning ch 3, fasten off. (16 dc clusters, 4 ch-2 sps, 12 ch- 1 sps).

Rnd 5: Join new yarn to any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp,  (ch 1, 3 dc, in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 3 times, * 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the ch 2 corner sp, (ch 1, 3 dc, in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 3 times, repeat from * around, join to beginning ch 3, fasten off. (20 dc clusters, 4 ch-2 sps, 16 ch- 1 sps

Rnd 6: Join new yarn to any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp,  (ch 1, 3 dc, in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 4 times, * 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the ch 2 corner sp, (ch 1, 3 dc, in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 4 times, repeat from * around, join to beginning ch 3, fasten off. (24 dc clusters, 4 ch-2 sps, 20 ch- 1 sps)

Rnd 7: Join new yarn to any ch-2 corner sp, 3 sc in the same sp as join, sc in each sp and st to the next corner sp, *3 sc in the corner sp, sc in each sp and st to the next corner sp; Repeat from * around, join to beg ch-1. (104 sc)

Weave in ends and block each square

Making Bag:

Joining squares: with wrong sides together, put a stitch marker in two corners.

Beginning in the left corner and working through both granny squares, join yarn, sc in the same sp as join, * sc in the next st and in each st to the next corner, 2 sc in the corner sp; repeat from * around to the next stitch marker, sc in the corner sp with stitch marker. (the sp between the stitch markers will be the top of the bag), remove st markers. Do not fasten off.


Working around the top of pouch

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around the top of the bag, join to beg ch-1. (52 sc)

Handles (make 2)

Using a Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook chain 56

Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from hook and in each ch to the end of ch, ch 3, turn. (53 dc)

Row 2: Dc in each st to the end of row, do not turn. (53 dc)

Row 3: Fold handle in half lengthwise, sl st in loop of foundation ch and st of the last row completed to join the edges together and close the handle, fasten off leaving a 8” (20.32 cm) tail, this will be used to sew handle in place.

Sew handles in place as shown in picture. (sewing on the handles is easier if you turn the tote inside out them sew them in place)

Lining: The tote can be used lined or unlined, just be aware that this is a large granny square and has gaps, so I have opted to line my Granny Square Mini Tote. Here is some information about lining a crochet bag or you can check out the great videos on Youtube.com
