Yarn: Paintbox cotton dk yarn in various colors, or any size 3 cotton dk yarn will work
Materials: US Size G/6 (4 mm) and E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hooks, yarn needle, scissors.
Difficulty: Easy
Size: 6-1/2" (16.51 cm) X 5-1/2” (14 cm)
Abbreviations and stitches (US Terms): ch(s) - chain(s), sl st - slip stitch, sc- single crochet, dc - double crochet, hdc – half double crochet, st(s) - stitch(es), sk - skip
Special stitches: Spike sc: see pattern below
Notes: This pattern is written in U.S. Terms Ch 3 at the beginning of the round counts as a double crochet and ch 2 counts as a hdc
Instructions: African Flower square (Make 2)
(Each square is 5" (12.7 cm) x 5" (12.7 cm)
Make a magic circle
Rnd 1: With G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook, ch
3, dc in the circle, ch 1, *2 dc in circle, ch 1; repeat from *6 more times,
fasten off. (16 dc, 8 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 2: Join new yarn to any ch-1 sp,
ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch-1; repeat from *
around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (24 dc, 8 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 3: Join new yarn to any ch-1 sp,
ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the same sp, *2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the next ch-1 sp;
repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (32 dc, 8 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 4: Join new yarn to any ch-2 sp,
ch 3, 6 dc in the same sp, *7dc in the next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join
to beg ch-3, fasten off. (56 dc)
Rnd 5: Join new yarn to any dc, sc
in each st around to the end of the shell, *spike sc in between each shell, (For
spike sc insert your hook into the little sp between the shells of round 3, pull
up a loop to the height of your current working round, yarn over, pull through
the 2 loops on the hook) see photo below, sc in each of the next dc; repeat from * around, sc
in the remaining dc, join to beg sc, fasten off. (56 sc, 8 spike sc)
Make the African flower into a square:
Rnd 6: Join new yarn to any spike
sc, ch 2, *sc in the next 4 sts, hdc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts, (dc,
ch 2,dc) in the next spike st (corner made), dc in the next 2 sts, hdc in the
next st, sc in the next 4 sts, hdc in the next spike st; repeat from * around
omitting the last hdc, join to beg hdc.
(32 sc, 12 hdc, 24 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 7: Ch 2, *hdc in each st to
corner ch-2 sp, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in the corner ch-2 sp; repeat from *
around, hdc in the last sts, join to beg ch-2, fasten off. (92 sc, 4 ch-2 sps)
Weave in ends and for best results block each square before making into pouch'
Making Pouch:
Joining squares: with wrong sides together, put a stitch
marker in two corners.
Beginning in the left corner and working through both
granny squares, join yarn, sc in the same sp as join, *sc in the next st and in
each st to the next corner, 2 sc in the corner sp; repeat from *
around to the next stitch marker, 2 sc in the corner sp with stitch marker.
(the sp between the stitch markers will be the top of the pouch), remove st markers.
Working around the top of pouch
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each sp and st
around the top of the pouch, join to beg ch-1. (44 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, sk 1 st, sc in the
next st, ch 2: repeat from * around, join to beg ch-2. (22 ch-2 sps, 22 sc).
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in the next ch-2
sp and in each ch-2 sp around, join to beg ch-1. (44 sc, 1 ch-1)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in the next st, sk the next st; repeat from * around, join to beg ch 1, fasten off, weave in ends.
Pouch Tie (make 2): Using the
E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook, ch 85, fasten off and weave in ends. Weave the tie
through the ch-2 sps from Rd 2.
Note: you can also use ribbon, twine or braided cord for a
tie.
Lining You can use the bag as is, or you can add a lining to the bag which will make it sturdier. Here are a few tutorials about lining a crochet bag: (there are many great YouTube videos about lining a bag)
