Japanese Knot Bag

Yarn: 
125g or 3 skeins of Patons Grace cotton yarn, color: #62008 Natural or any #3 Dk yarn

Materials: US Size E/4 (3.5 mm) and G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors.

Difficulty: Easy

Size: 9 1/4" (24.76 cm) x 9 1/4" (24.76 cm) not including handles 

Stitch Guide: Ch(s) - chain(s), sc- single crochet, dc- double crochet, st(s) - stitch(es)

Notes: This pattern is written in U.S. terms, ch-3 counts as a stitch

Instructions:

With G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook chain 49

Note: from here you will be working around the ch 49 row (do not turn)   

Rnd 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, now working on the other side of ch, sc in each ch across, join to the first sc. (96 sc)

Rnds 2-5: Switch to E/4 (3.5 mm) and sc in each st around, join to beg sc. (96 sc)

Rnd 6: ch 3, 4 dc in the same st as join, *skip 2 sts, sc in the next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in the next st; repeat from *around to the last 2 sts, sk the last 2 sts and join to beg ch-3. (80 dc, 16 sc)

Rnd 7: Sl st to the 3rd dc of the 5-dc group, *sc in the same st, 5 dc in the next sc, sc in the 3rd dc of the 5-dc group; repeat from *around, join to beg sc. (80 dc, 16 sc)

Rnd 8: Ch 3, 4 dc in the same st, sc in the 3rd dc of the 5-dc group, *5 dc in the next sc, sc in the 3rd dc of the 5-dc group; repeat from * around, join to beg sc. (80 dc, 16 sc)

Repeat Rnds 7 and 8 until the bag reaches 8 ½” (21.6 cm) long. (24 rows were completed) do not fasten off.

Top of bag and Handles

Rnd 1: Sc in each dc and dc in each sc around, join to beg sc. (80 sc, 16 dc)

Rnd 2: Sc in each st around, join to beg sc. (96 sc) Do Not fasten off

For handle placement: place stitch markers on the sides of the bag, making sure there are about 47 sts between the stitch markers.

Handles

Handle 1:

Row 1: Using the E/4 (3.5 mm) Crochet hook and working from stitch marker on the right side, sc in the next 12 sts, ch 1 turn. (12 sc)

Row 2: Sc in the next 12 sts, ch 1, turn. (12 sc)

Repeat row 2 until the handle reaches 12" (30.5 cm) long, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing the handle on the other side.

Handle 2:

Row 1: Flip bag over so the other stitch marker is on the right side, attach yarn to the stitch with the stitch marker, working from stitch marker on the right side, sc in the next 12 sts, ch 1 turn. (12 sc)

Row 2: Sc in the next 12 sts, ch 1, turn. (12 sc)

Repeat row 2 until the handle reaches 8” (20.3 cm) long, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing the handle on the other side.

Sew handles to the opposite side of the bag. Weave in ends.

For the best results block your finished bag. As with any crochet bag, adding a lining will make your bag more durable.

To close bag, fill with your items and insert the longer handle through the shorter handle. (see photo above)
