African Flower Mandala

Yarn: Paintbox Cotton dk yarn or any size 3 dk cotton yarn

Materials: US Size E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors.

Difficulty: Easy                            

Size: 10 ½” (26.67 cm) round

Abbreviations and Stitches (U.S. Terms): ch(s) - chain(s), dc - double crochet, hdc – half double crochet, sc- single crochet, sk – skip, sl st – slip stitch, sp – space, st(s) - stitch(es)

Gauge: 22 sts x 30 rows

Special stitches: Spike sc: see pattern below

Notes: This pattern is written in U.S. Terms, Ch 3 counts as a stitch

Instructions:

Make a magic circle

Rnd 1: Ch 3, dc in the circle, ch 1, *2 dc in circle, ch 1; repeat from * 6 more times, fasten off. (16 dc, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 2: Join yarn to any ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch-1; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (24 dc, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 3: Join yarn to any ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the same sp, *2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (32 dc, 8 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 4: Join yarn to any ch-2 sp, ch 3, 6 dc in the same sp, *7dc in the next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (56 dc)

Rnd 5: Join yarn to any dc, sc in each st around to the end of the shell, *spike sc in between each shell, (For spike sc insert your hook into the little sp between the shells of Rnd 3, pull up a loop to the height of your current working Rnd, yarn over, pull through the 2 loops on the hook), sc in each of the next dc; repeat from * around, sc in the remaining dc, join to beg sc, fasten off. (56 sc, 8 spike sc)

Rnd 6: Join yarn to any spike sc, ch 3, hdc in the next 2 sts, sc in the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts, *dc in the next st (spike st from Rnd 5), hdc in the next 2 sts, sc in the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts; rep from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (8 dc, 32 hdc, 24 sc)

Rnd 7: Join yarn to any st, sc in the same st as join, ch 2, *sk the next st, sc in the next st, ch 2; rep from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off. (32 sc, 32 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 8: Join yarn to any ch-2 sp, ch 4, (counts as a dc and ch-1), dc in same sp as join, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in the next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join to 3rd ch of beg ch-4, fasten off. (64 dc, 32 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 9: Join yarn to any ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 1, *3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1; rep from* around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (96 dc, 32 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 10: Join yarn to any ch-1 sp, sc in the same sp as join, ch 3, *sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 3; repeat from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off. (32 sc, 32 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 11: Join yarn to any ch-3 sp, ch 5 (counts as dc and ch-2 sp), dc in same sp, *(dc, ch 2, dc) in the next ch-3 sp; rep from* around, join to 3rd ch of beg ch-5, fasten off. (64 dc, 32 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 12: Join yarn to any ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc, in same sp, ch 2, *3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 2; rep from 8 around, join to beg ch-2, fasten off. (96 dc, 32 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 13: Join yarn to any ch-2 sp, 2 sc in same sp as join, sc in the next 3 sts, *2 sc in the next ch-2 sp, sc in the next 3 sts; rep from * around, fasten off. (160 sc)

Rnd 14: Join yarn to any sc, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp as join, *sk the next 3 sts, (sc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next st; rep from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off. (160 dc, 40 sc)

Weave In ends and for best results block.
