African Flower Square and a Half

Yarn: Madlandia, Hue-Mongous 100% cotton yarn dk size 3 yarn. the colors used are: 1001 Babble fish, #1003 Safety Dance, #1010 Razzmatazz, #1006 Red Shirt, #1025 Larry Salad. 

Materials: US Size G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors.

Difficulty: Easy  

Size: Square is 5 1/2" (14 cm) x  5 1/2" (14 cm) and Half Square or triangle is 7" (17.78 cm) x 3 1/2” (8.9 cm)

Abbreviations and Stitches (U.S. Terms): ch(s) - chain(s), dc - double crochet, sc- single crochet, sk – skip, sl st – slip stitch, sp – space, st(s) - stitch(es)

Gauge: Yarn gauge: 15 sts x 18 rows = 4” (10.16 cm)

Special stitches: Spike sc: see pattern below for instructions

Notes: This pattern is written in U.S. Terms

Ch 3 at the beginning of the round counts as a double crochet and ch 2 counts as a hdc

Instructions: African Flower square (This pattern is inspired by the African Flower Square by Barbara Smith)

Make a magic circle

Rnd 1: With G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook, ch 3, dc in the circle, ch 1, *2 dc in circle, ch 1; repeat from *6 more times, fasten off. (16 dc, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 2: Join new yarn to any ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 1, *3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch-1; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (24 dc, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 3: Join new yarn to any ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the same sp, *2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (32 dc, 8 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 4: Join new yarn to any ch-2 sp, ch 3, 6 dc in the same sp, *7 dc in the next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (56 dc)

Rnd 5: Join new yarn to any dc, sc in each st around to the end of the shell, *spike sc in between each shell, (For spike sc insert your hook into the little sp between the shells of Rnd 3, pull up a loop to the height of your current working Rnd, yarn over, pull through the 2 loops on the hook), sc in each of the next dc; repeat from *around, sc in the remaining dc, join to beg sc, fasten off. (56 sc, 8 spike sc)

Making it square

Rnd 6: Join new yarn to any spike sc, ch 2, *sc in the next 4 sts, hdc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts, (dc, ch 2,dc) in the next spike st (corner made), dc in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next st, sc in the next 4 sts, dc in the next spike st; repeat from * around omitting the last hdc, join to beg hdc. (32 sc, 8 hdc, 28 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 7: Starting from join, sc in the next 6 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the corner ch-2 sp, * hdc in the next 2 sts, sc in the next 13 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the corner ch-2 sp; rep from * 2 more times finishing in the last corner, hdc in the next 2 sts, sc in the last 7 sts, join to beg sc, fasten off. (52 sc, 4 ch-2 sps, 8 dc,16 hdc)

Weave in ends and for best results block each square.

Half African Flower Square (AF Triangle)

Notes: Ch-2 and Ch-3 count as stitch

The half square is worked on the right side facing you, join the yarn on the right side of work.

Pattern:

Make a magic circle

Rnd 1: With G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook, ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1,  2dc, ch 1, 2dc, in circle, fasten off and close circle. (8 dc, 3 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 2: Join yarn to beg ch-3, ch 3, dc in the same st as join, ch 1, (3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1) 3 times, 2 dc in the last st, fasten off. (13 dc, 4-ch-1 sps)

Rnd 3: Join yarn to beg ch-3, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-1 sp; repeat 3 more times, sk next dc, dc in the last dc, fasten off. (18 dc, 4- ch-2 sps)

Rnd 4: Join yarn to beg ch 3, ch 3, *7 dc in the next ch-2 sp; rep from * 3 more times, dc in the last st, fasten off. (30 dc)

Rnd 5: Join a new yarn to beg ch-3, sc in same st as join, *sc in each st to the end of the shell, *spike sc in between each shell, (For spike sc insert your hook into the little sp between the shells of Rnd 3, pull up a loop to the height of your current working Rnd, yarn over, pull through the 2 loops on the hook); rep from *3 more times, sc in the last st, fasten off. (30 sc, 3 spike sc)

Rnd 6: Join a new yarn to beg ch-3, sc in same st as join, sc in the next 7 sts, dc in the next st (this is the spike st from Rnd 5), sc in the next 4 sts, hdc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next st (this is the spike st from Rnd 5), corner made, dc in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next st, sc in the next 4 sts, dc in the next st (this is the spike st from Rnd 5), sc in the last 8 sts, fasten off. (24 sc, 6 dc, 2 hdc, 1- ch-2 sp)

Rnd 7: Join yarn to beg sc, sc in same st as join, sc in the next 13 sts, hdc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the ch-2 sp, dc in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next st, sc in the next 14 sts, fasten off. (28 sc, 6 dc, 2 hdc,1 ch-2 sp)

Weave in ends and for best results block.
