Modern Granny Square

Yarn: Patons Grace- Dk cotton yarn (This pattern works best when done in Dk cotton yarn). The colors of yarn used can be found Here.

Materials: US Size F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook, Yarn Needle, scissors, tape measure

Difficulty: Easy

Size: 5” (12.7 cm) x 5” (12.7 cm)

Stitch Guide: ch(s) - chain(s), sc- single crochet, dc - double crochet, st(s) - stitch(es)

Notes about pattern: This pattern is a traditional granny square with an added row in between each row to give the granny square a different look. Chain 3 counts as a stitch

Instructions:

Start with a Magic Circle

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc inside circle, ch 1, *3 dc in circle, ch 1; repeat from * 2 more times, join to beg ch 3, fasten off, weave in ends, (12 dc, 4 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 2: Join yarn in any ch-1 sp, 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc in the same sp (corner made), ch 2, * 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 2; repeat from * 2 more times, join to beg sc, fasten off, weave in ends, (8-ch-2 sps, 16 sc)

Rnd 3: Join yarn in any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp,  ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 1, *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next ch-2 corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join to the beg ch-3, fasten off, weave in ends. (12- 3 dc groups, 4 ch-2 sps, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 4: Join a new yarn in ch-2 corner sp, 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc in the same sp, ch 2, (sc in the next ch-1 sp between the 3-dc group, ch 2) 2 times, *(2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in the corner ch-2 sp, ch 2,  (sc in the next ch-1 sp between the 3-dc group, ch 2) 2 times; repeat from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off, weave in ends. (16 ch-2 sps, 24 sc)

Rnd 5: Join a new yarn in ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, in the same sp, ch 1, (3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 1) 3 times, * 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 1) 3 times; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off, weave in ends. (60 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 16 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 6: Join a new yarn in ch-2 corner sp, 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc in the same sp, ch 2, (sc in the next ch-1 sp between the 3-dc group, ch 2) 4 times, *(2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in the corner ch-2 sp, ch 2,  (sc in the next ch-1 sp between the 3-dc group, ch 2) 4 times; repeat from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off, weave in ends. (24 ch- 2 sps, 32 sc)

Rnd 7: Join a new yarn in ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, in the same sp, ch 1, (3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 1) 5 times, * 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 1) 5 times; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off, weave in ends. (84 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 24 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 8: Join a new yarn in ch-2 corner sp, sc, ch 2, sc in the same sp, ch 2, (sc in the next ch-1 sp between the 3-dc group, ch 2) 6 times, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, (sc in the next ch-1 sp between the 3-dc group, ch 2) 6 times; repeat from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off, weave in ends. (32 ch- 2 sps, 32 sc)
