D60 Granny Square

Yarn: Chunky Thread by Lori Holt or Sport weight #2 100% cotton yarn

Materials: US Size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, tape measure

Difficulty: Easy

Size: 5” (12.7 cm) square

Gauge: 18 sts = 4” (10.16 cm)

Abbreviations and Stitches (U.S. Terms): beg – beginning, ch – chain, dc – double crochet, rep – repeat, sc – single crochet, sk – skip, sp - space, st(s) – stitch(es), tr – trible crochet

Special stitches: Spike dc-Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space one or more rows below the next stitch and pull up a loop to the level of the current round, (yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook).

Notes: Beginning ch-3 counts as a stitch

Instructions:

Make a magic ring

Rnd 1: Ch 3, sc in the ring, ch 3, *sc in the ring, ch 3; rep from * 6 more times, join to beg ch-4. (8 ch-3 sps, 8 sc)

Rnd 2: Join yarn to any ch-3 sp, sc in the same sp, ch 3, *sc in the next ch 3 sp, ch 3; rep from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off. (8 sc, 8 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 3: Join yarn to any ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp as join, ch 1, *3 dc in the next ch-3 sp, ch 1; rep from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (24 dc, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 4: Join yarn to any ch-1 sp, sc in the same sp, ch 3, *sc in the next ch sp, spike dc in the sc from Rnd 2, sc in same sp, ch 3, *sc in the next ch sp, spike dc in the sc from Rnd 2, sc in the same sp, ch 3; rep from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off. (8 spike dc, 16 sc, 8 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 5: Join yarn to any ch-3 sp, ch 4, 2 tr in the same sp, ch 2, 3 tr in the same sp (corner made), ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch sp, ch 1, *(3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in the next sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next sp, ch 1; rep from * around, join to beg ch-4, fasten off. (24 tr, 12 dc, 12 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 6: Join yarn to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in sp, ch 1, (3 dc in the next sp, ch 1) 2 times, *(3 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, in the next sp, ch 1) 2 times; rep from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (48 dc, 16 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 7: Join yarn to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp, ch 1, (3 dc, in the next sp, ch 1) 3 times, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) 3 times; rep from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (60 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 16 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 8: Join yarn to any corner ch-2 sp, *2 sc in the corner sp, (ch 3, 2 sc in the next sp) 4 times, ch 3; rep from * around, join to beg sc, fasten off. (40 sc, 20 ch-3 sps)

Weave in ends and for best results block.
