Winter Flower Scarf

December 12, 2024 blog post has more information about the pattern.

Yarn: Deborah Norville Premier yarns: Everyday Worsted Weight yarn (4 oz/203 yds/113g per skein): 2 skeins #1012 Black (A), 1 skein #2008 Parfait (B)


Materials: US Size I/9 (5.5mm) and J/10 (6 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, and measuring tape

Difficulty: Easy

Size: Scarf: 4½“ ( 11.43 cm) wide by 66” (167.64 cm) long, Flower: 6” (15.24 cm) across 

Gauge: 12 sc and 15 rows = 4” (10.16 cm)

Stitch Guide: Beg – beginning, ch(s) - chain(s), dc - double crochet, hdc - half double crochet, RS - right side, sc - single crochet, sl st – slip stitch, sp(s)- space (s), st(s)– stitch(s), tr – treble crochet,

Notes: This pattern is written in U. S. terms. Scarf notes: The ch-1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch and the J/10 (6 mm) hook is used to make beginning chain, and the rest of the scarf is worked using the I/9 (5.5mm) hook

Instructions:

Scarf

With color A and the J/10 (6 mm) crochet hook chain 201


Change to the I/9 (5.5 mm) hook for the rest of the scarf


Row 1 (RS): Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn. (200 sc)


Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st and in each st across; turn. (200 sc)


Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc here and throughout), skip 1st st, dc in next st and in each st across; turn. (200 dc)


Note: Row 4 is worked in the spaces in-between the dc sts


Row 4: Ch 1, sc in the first sp, sc in the next sp in-between the dc sts and in each sp across, sc in the ch-3 from previous round; turn. (200 sc)


Row 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st and in each st across; turn. (200 sc)


Repeat rows 3, 4, & 5 until the scarf is 4 ½ “(11.43 cm) wide, finishing with row 5, fasten off, weave in ends.

Flower

Notes: On chain rounds 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, the chain will be worked behind the petal of previous round.


With color B and a J/10 (6.0 mm) hook make a magic ring


Rnd 1(RS): Ch 2 (counts as an hdc), 9 hdc in ring, join to top of ch-2. (10 hdc)


Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as a sc and ch-2 sp), skip next st, *sc in the next st, ch 2, skip next st; repeat from * around, join the 1st ch of ch-3. (5 sc, 5 ch-2 sps)

(After round 2 the flower begins to curve slightly)


Rnd 3: Sc in ch-2 sp, (hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in the same sp, *(sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in the next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join to beg sc. (10 hdc, 5 dc, 10 sc)


Rnd 4: Ch 3, *sl st in the skipped st from round 2 see photos below, ch 3; Repeat from * around, join to 1st chain of beg ch-3. (6 ch-3 sps, 6 sl st)


                   Fold the petal forward and join yarn, ch 3,

Rnd 5: Sc in ch-3 sp, (2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the same sp, ch 1, *(sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the next ch-3 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join to beg sc. (24 hdc, 12 dc, 12 sc, 6 ch-1 sps)


Rnd 6: Ch 4, *sl st in the ch-1 sp between the petals, ch 4; repeat from * around, join to 1st ch of beg ch-4.  (6 ch-4 sps, 6 sl st)


Rnd 7: Sc in ch-4 sp, (2 hdc, 3 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the same sp, ch 1, *(sc, 2 hdc, 3 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the next ch-4 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join to beg sc. (24 hdc, 18 dc, 12 sc, 6 ch-1 sps)


Rnd 8: Ch 5 *sl st in the ch-1 sp between the petals, ch 5; repeat from * around, join to 1st ch of beg ch-5. (6 ch-5 sps, 6 sl st)


Rnd 9: Sc in ch-5 sp, (2 hdc, 2 dc, tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the same sp, ch 1, *(sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the next ch-5 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join to beg sc. ( 24 hdc, 24 dc, 6 tr, 12 sc, 6 ch-1 sps)


Rnd 10: Ch 6 *sl st in the ch-1 sp between the petals, ch 6; repeat from * around, join to 1st ch of beg ch-6. (6 ch-6 sps, 6 sl st)


Rnd 11: Sc in ch-6 sp, (2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the same sp, ch 1,*(sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr,  2 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the next ch-6 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join to beg sc. ( 24 hdc, 24 dc, 12 tr, 12 sc, 6 ch-1 sps)


Rnd 12: Ch 4, sl st into the ch-6 sp from round 10 (working the sl st between the 2 tr sts from round 11) See photos below, ch 4, *sl st in ch-1 sp between the petals, ch 4, sl st into the ch-6 sp from round 10 (working the sl st between the 2 tr sts from round 11), ch 4; repeat from * around, join to 1st ch of beg ch- 4. (12 sl st, 12 ch- 4 sps)       

Fold the petal forward, ch 4,

now working between the two treble stitches from round 11, slip stitch into the ch-6 sp from round 10


Rnd 13: Sc in ch-4 sp, (2 hdc, 3 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the same sp, *(sc, 2 hdc, 3 dc, 2 hdc, sc) in the next ch-4 sp; repeat from * around, join to the beg sc and fasten off, weave in ends. (48 hdc, 36 dc, 24 sc)

 

Flower loop

With J/10 (6.0 mm) hook and color (A) ch 9


Row 1 (RS): Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, and in each ch across; turn. (8 sc)


Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in next st and in each st across; turn. (8 sc)


Repeat row 2 until the loop is 3” (7.62 cm) wide (about 11 rows), fasten off, weave in ends.


The piece should measure 2-1/2” (6.35 cm) by 3” (7.62 cm)

Finishing

Sew the flower loop to the back of the flower by sewing down the sides, leave the top and bottom open to slide the scarf through. See photo below.



Thread the scarf through the flower loop and wear.
