Granny Squares and Stripes Blanket

Yarn: Stylecraft Special DK: 6-skeins of cream #1005 1-skeins of the following colors: Turquoise #1068, Magenta #1084, Saffron #1081 (for the trim and for making granny squares)

Different leftover colors of Stylecraft Special dk yarns were used for granny squares


Materials: U.S. Size G-6 (4mm) crochet hook, measuring tape, yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers. 


Finished Size: 53 inches (135 cm) by 53 inches (135 cm)


Gauge:

24 dc sts by 14 rows = 4" (10.16 cm)


Difficulty:

Easy


Stitches used

ch-chain, sc-single crochet, hdc-half double crochet, dc-double crochet, tr-treble/triple crochet, sk-skip, yo-yarn over.


Special Stitches:

Cluster Stitch- (yo, insert hook in indicated st and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops) 4 times, yo and pull through all 5 remaining loops on hook.

Puff stitch- *Yo, insert hook into stitch indicated and pull up a loop, * repeat from * to* four more times, yo and pull through all 9 loops on the hook, ch 1 to close stitch.

Spike hdc- Yo, insert hook into stitch or space one round below next stitch or space and pull up a loop to the level of the current stitch, yarn over and pull through all three loops.


Notes about pattern:

This pattern is written in U.S. terms. 

Pattern is written with color changes.

Ch-3 counts as a stitch.               


Sunburst Granny Square (Make 9 for the center, 40 for border) 

Each square is 4 x 4 inches (10cm x 10cm) square


Make a Magic ring

Round 1: Ch 3, work 15 more dc in the ring, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3, fasten off. (16 dc)

Round 2: Attach yarn with a sl st to any dc, ch 1, puff st in the same st and in each dc around, join with a sl st to the first puff st, fasten off. (16 puff sts) 

Round 3: Attach yarn with a sl st in the ch 1 sp of any puff st, ch 2 (does not count as st), cluster st in the same sp, ch 2, *cluster st in the next ch-1 sp, ch 2; repeat from * around, join with a sl st to the beginning cluster st, fasten off. (16 clusters) 

Round 4: Attach yarn with a sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 4 to count as the first tr, 2 tr in the same sp, (*3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, 3 hdc in the next ch-2 sp, 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp*, [3 tr, ch 3, 3 tr] all in the next ch-2 sp for corner) Repeat between ( )’s 2 times, then repeat from * to * once; 3 tr in the same sp as beginning tr, ch 3; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 4. fasten off, weave in ends.


After making 9 squares join them together. There are many different ways you can join your squares, these squares were put together with a ss join.


Granny Stripe Rows

Sc around the blanket making sure to have an even amount of stitches on all sides. Since the next rows are going to be done in the granny stripe pattern and this pattern is done in multiples of 3, the number of sc on each side needs to be divisible by 3. (48 sc on each side and 3 sc in each corner).


Granny Stripe Pattern- 6 rows = 2" (5.08 cm)

Round 1:  Attach yarn in the center sc of the 3 sc corner, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same st, *skip 2 sts, work 3 dc into next st (this is a 3 dc cluster),* repeat from * to *  to the corner  3 sc, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the center sc of the 3 sc corner, repeat from * to * to the next corner, around the blanket to beginning ch 3, join with ss.


* for rounds 2-9 you will be working in the spaces between the dc clusters.


Rounds 2-9: Sl st to the ch- 2 space in the corner, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp, * 3 dc in each sp between dc clusters to the next corner, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the corner ch-2 sp * repeat from * to * around the blanket, join with sl st to beginning ch 3, fasten off after rd 9, weave in ends.


Mini Granny Square-(Make 36) each square is 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches (5.58 cm x 5.58 cm) 


Make a Magic ring or ch 4 and join with a ss to beginning ch to form a ring

Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in the circle, ch 2, *3 dc in the circle ch 2* repeat from * to * two more times, join with sl st to the beginning ch 3. (4-3dc clusters, 4-ch-2 spaces)

Round 2: Sl st to the next ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space, *ch 1, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp * repeat from * to * two more times, ending with ch 1, sl st in the beginning ch 3. (8- 3 dc clusters, 8 ch-2 sps) 

Round 3: Sl st to the next ch 2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in the same sp, * ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next ch 2 sp *Repeat from * to * 2 more times, ending with a ch1, 3 dc, in next sp, ch 1, join with sl st to the beginning ch 3, fasten off, weave in ends. (12- 3 dc clusters, 12 ch-2 sps)


Join squares together using a ss join to form a strip of squares and add the strips to the blanket with a ss join. 



Granny Stripe Foundation Round

To make the foundation row, attach the yarn with a ss to any space between the 3 dc cluster, ch 3, ss between the next 3 dc cluster, continue around the blanket, join to beg ss, fasten off.

Note:

When you come to the area where the two granny squares are stitched together make sure that you ss in the corner of the granny square, ch 3 and ss in the corner of the next granny square. (see photos below)



Round 1: Join yarn to any ch-3 sp, ch 3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, * 3 dc in the next ch 3 sp* repeat from * to * to the corner ch 3 sp, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the corner ch 3 sp, repeat from * to * and 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in each corner around the blanket, sl st in the beginning ch 3. (39-3 dc clusters on each side of the blanket, 2-3 dc clusters, ch 2 in each corner)

Round 2-10: Sl st to the space between the 3 dc cluster, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, * 3 dc in the next sp between 3 dc cluster,  repeat from *  to the corner ch 2 sp, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the corner ch 2 sp, repeat from * to * and 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in each corner around the blanket, sl st in the beginning ch 3, fasten off after round 10, weave in ends.

40 Sunburst Granny Square for the next border (see pattern above)

Make 40 sunburst granny squares, make sure to weave in the ends. Put the granny squares together in rows using the slip stitch joining method. (2 strips of 9 squares and 2 strips of 11 squares were made)

Once you have the granny square strips completed join them to the blanket using the slip stitch joining method. Weave in ends.

Final Granny Stripe Rows

Sc around the blanket making sure to have an even amount of stitches on all sides. Since the next rows are going to be done in the granny stripe pattern and it is done in multiples of 3, the number of sc on each side has to be divisible by 3. (183 sc on each side and 3 sc in each corner)


Round 1- Follow granny stripe pattern row 1 above

Round 2- 8-Follow granny stripe pattern row 2 above, end off after round 8, fasten off, weave in ends.


Final Edging

Round 1- Sc around the blanket, 3 sc in the corner ch 1 sp (211 sts), do not end off place a stitch marker in the loop.

Round 2- With a new color, join with a sl st in the st that is 2 sts to the left of the corner st. Ch 3, sk 1 st, * hdc in the next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, repeat from * around to the corner, (hdc, ch 1, hdc ) in the 2nd sc of the 3 sc corner, repeat from * around, join with a sl st to beginning ch 3, end off, weave in ends.

Round 3- Remove stitch marker, pull the yarn from rd 1 to the front, pull loop through the ch 1 loop of round 2, ch 3, sk next st, * spike hdc over the ch 1 space of round 2 into the sc of round 1, ch 1, skip next st, repeat from * to corner (hdc, ch1, hdc) in corner ch 1 sp, repeat from * around , join with sl st to beginning ch 3, do not end off place a stitch marker in the loop.

Round 4: With a new color, join with a sl st in ch 1 sp, ch 3, * hdc in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1, repeat from * to the corner, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in corner ch 1 sp, repeat from * around , join with a sl st to beginning ch 3, end off, weave in ends.

Round 5: Repeat round 3, but spike hdc into the hdc from rd 3, do not end off, place a stitch marker in the loop.

Round 6-7: Repeat rounds 4 and 5.

Round 8: Sl st into ch 1 sp, * 2 sc in each ch 1 sp  to the corner, 3 sc in each corner ch 1 sp, repeat from * around , join to beginning sc

Round 9: Sl st in sc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in the same st, sk next st,* (sc, ch 3, sc) in the next st, sk next st, repeat from * around, join with sl st to the first sc, fasten off, weave in ends.
