Granny Hearts

Yarn: Stylecraft Classique Cotton Dk yarn (3.5 oz/201 yds/100g per skein) in various colors. *Stylecraft has rebranded this yarn as Naturals organic cotton.

Materials:

US Size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, and twine, yarn or ribbon to hang hearts.

Stitch Guide:

ch(s)–chain(s), sl st–slip stitch, sc–single crochet, dc–double crochet, hdc-half double crochet, st(s)–stitch(es), tr–treble crochet


Notes:

Pattern is written in U.S. terms

The ch-3 counts as a stitch.

For Garland make 8 hearts (or how ever many you want for your garland)

For ornament make one heart

Finished Size: Each heart is 4” (10.16 cm). If making a garland the length is up to you.

Instructions 

Make a magic circle

Rd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc, in circle, ch 1, * 3 dc, ch 1, repeat from * two more times, join to beginning ch 3, fasten off. (4- 3 dc groups, 4-ch-1 sps)

Rd 2: Join yarn to any ch-1 space, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp, (corner made), * ch 1, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next space, repeat from * two more times, join to beginning ch 3, fasten off. (4-3 dc groups, 4 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-1 sps)

Rd 3: Join yarn to any ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 1, *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next ch-2 corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, repeat from * around to the last ch-2 corner sp, 2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc in the last ch-2 corner sp (add a stitch marker in the ch-1 sp just made), ch 1, join to beginning ch 3, fasten off. (10-3 dc groups, 2 hdc groups, 3 ch-2 sps, 9 ch-1 sps)

Rd 4: With the granny square facing you in a diamond shape with the 2 hdc groups (where the stitch marker was placed) as the top point (see photo below), join yarn to the right side ch-2 corner, sc in the ch-2 sp, hdc in the next 2 sts, dc in the next st, tr in the next ch-1 sp, tr in the next 3 sts, 3 tr in the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next st, hdc in the next st, sl st in the ch-1 sp,(this should be where the stitch maker was placed), remove stitch marker, working down the other side, hdc in the next st, dc in the next st, 3 tr in the ch-1 sp, tr in the next 3 sts, tr in the next ch-1 sp, dc in the next st, hdc in the next 2 sts, sc in the ch-2 sp, 1 sc in the next st and in each st and ch-1 sp to the next ch-2 sp, 3 sc in the ch-2 sp (this will be the point of the heart), sc in each st and sp to the beg ch-1 sp, join to beg sc, fasten off. 

Weave in ends and block.

Making the garland: 

Modern style:

Using yarn in a color of your choice, ch 15, ss into the first ch (furthest from the hook) to create a loop for hanging.

Ch 20, *ss into top of first heart, ch 20. Repeat from * eight times, until all hearts are attached. Ch 35, ss into the fifteenth ch from hook for another loop. Fasten off, weave in ends.


Country style:

The length of the garland is up to you.  Cut the twine the desired length. The twine was a little thick so one strand was removed, leaving two strands of twine for the garland.

Using 8 hearts, Lay out the hearts in the desired pattern

Attach the twine from front to back of the top of the heart using a large yarn needle.


For Ornament:

Using yarn, Twine, or ribbon, cut to desired length and thread through any top point of the star, and knot the two ends together.
