Granny Stripe Shoulder Bag

Yarn: 
Stylecraft Classique Cotton DK yarn (3.5 oz/201 yds/100g per skein) 1 skein of black 3093 and 8 yards (7.31 m) of various colors (each row uses 8 yards (7.31 m) of yarn) *Stylecraft has rebranded this yarn as Naturals organic cotton

Materials: 

US Size D/3 (3.25 mm) and (3 mm) crochet hook, measuring tape, yarn needle, scissors, sew in magnetic bag closure (purchased on Etsy) and fabric, needle, thread for lining if you will be lining your bag

Difficulty: Beginner               

Size: 9 ½” (24 cm) by 8 ½” (21.6 cm) not including strap

Gauge:                                                                                          16 sc and 20 rows = 4” (10.16 cm) x 4” (10.16 cm)

Stitch Guide:                                                                                      ch(s) - chain(s), dc – double crochet, sc-single crochet

Special Stitches: Reverse single crochet (crab stitch)- insert hook in the next stitch to the right, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through the 2 loops on the hook.

Notes:   Pattern is written in U.S. terms  Chain 3 counts as a stitch                                                                                                   Instructions: With D/3 (3.25 mm) crochet hook chain 31

Set up row: Switch to the (3 mm) crochet hook and sc in each ch across. (31 sc)

Note: from here you will be working around the set up row (do not turn)

Rd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in the first st, *sk 2 sts, 3 dc in the next st; repeat from * to the end working 3 dc in the last st, ch 1, continue working on the other side of beginning ch, work 3 dc in the first ch, *sk 2 chs, 3 dc in the next ch; repeat from * to the end, ch 1, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (22-3dc groups, 11 on each side of oval created)

Rd 2: Join a new yarn to any ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc, in the same sp, * 3 dc in the next sp between the 3 dc group; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (22-3dc groups)

Rd 3: Join a new yarn to any sp between 3 dc group, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp,*3 dc in the next sp; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (22-3dc groups)

Rds 4-25: Repeat Rd 3, changing to a new color for each Rd, weave in ends as you go.

Rd 26: Join yarn to any st, ch 2, hdc in each st around, join to beg ch-2, do not fasten off. (66 hdc)

Rd 27: ch-1, reverse sc in each st around, join to beg ch-1, fasten off, weave in ends. (66 reverse sc)

Strap: With bag facing you, place a stitch marker on each side of the bag (this is for strap placement) See photo below                                                                                              

Using the 3.25 mm hook 
Row 1: With the side of the bag facing you, join yarn in the hdc (from Rd 26, you will be working over Rd 27) 2 sts to the right of the stitch marker (see photo below), sc in the same st and in the next 4 sts. ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Row 2: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Repeat row 2 until the strap reaches 37” (94 cm) or until the strap is the desired length. Attach to the other side of the bag making sure the stitch marker on the other side matches up with the third sc of the strap, weave in ends.

Strap Edging:  Reverse sc around both sides of the strap for a more finished edge.  Weave in Ends                                                                            

Lining and Closure You can use the bag as is, or you can add a lining to the bag which will make it sturdier. Here are a few tutorials about lining a crochet bag: (there are some great YouTube videos about lining a bag)

After adding the lining, sew in the magnetic bag closure.
