Assembling the Bag: Skully Panels (make 2)

Lay out the granny squares in a 9 square panel, 3 X 3 (see photo below)

Join the squares together, you can use any method to join your granny squares, for the tote bag in the photos the invisible join method was used.

Once the 2 panels are complete, place the panels-right sides together and join the sides together. Turn it right side out. (it should be a large tube)

Adding the bottom of the bag:

Take the bag bottom and add a stitch marker to each end, making sure there are 45 sts between each stitch marker, as in photo below

Place the bag bottom to the bottom of the bag matching the sides with the stitch markers to the sides of the bag, as in photo below

Join the bag bottom to the bottom of the bag using a sc join, fasten off, weave in ends.

Top of bag and Handles

Note: if you would like your handles longer increase the number of ch sts, the handles for this bag were done by chaining 70 which makes the handles 20” long (50.8 cm)

Rnd 1: Take a stitch marker and mark the stitch on the side of the tote (see photo below), join yarn to the stitch with the stitch marker on the right hand side, sc in each st around, remove stitch markers as you go, join to beg sc. (90 sc)

Rnd 2: Sc in the next 13 sts, ch 70, skip the next 19 sts, sc in the next st (joining the handle), sc in the next 26 sts, ch 70, skip the next 19 sts, sc in the next sc (joining the handle), sc in the next 13 sts, join to beg sc. (52 sc, 140 chs)

Now working on the outside of the handles (see photo below)

Rnd 3: Sc in each st and ch around, join to beg sc. (190 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc in each st around, join to beg sc, fasten off and weave in ends. (190 sc)

Now working on the inside of the handles (see photo below)

Rnd 5: Join yarn to the inside of the handle, sc across the top of the bag and in each st on the inside of the handle. (90 sc)

Rnd 6: Sc in each st across the top of the bag and inside of the handle, fasten off. (90 sc)

Now, working on the other side of bag

Rnds 7-8: Repeat Rnds 5-6.

Weave in ends and block.

You can use the tote bag as is, or you can add a lining to the bag which will make it sturdier. Here are a few tutorials about lining a crochet bag: (there are some great YouTube videos out there about lining a bag)
