Gift Card Holder

December 19, 2024 blog post has more information about the pattern.

Yarn:
Gift card holder: dk yarn (size 3) or worsted weight yarn (size 4).  Appliques: dk cotton yarn (size 3)

Materials: US Size I/9 (5.5 mm) and (2.5 mm) crochet hooks, yarn needle, scissors, tape measure, stitch markers

Difficulty: Easy

Size: Gift card holder: 3” (7.62 cm) wide by 3-3/4” (9.5 cm) high

Abbreviations and Stitches (U.S. Terms): ch – chain, dc – double crochet, hdc – half double crochet, rep – repeat, RS – right side, sc – single crochet, sk – skip, sl st – slip stitch, st(s) – stitch(es), tr – treble crochet

Notes: The US Size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook is used to make the gift card holder and the (2.5 mm) crochet hook is used to make the crochet appliques to decorate the gift card holder.

If you are using a dk yarn to make the gift card holder you will need to use two strands of yarn held together, for worsted weight yarn only use 1 strand of yarn.

Instructions

Gift card holder

With US Size I/9 (5.5 mm) and two strands of dk yarn or one strand of worsted weight yarn, ch 9

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (8 sc)

Row 2: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. (8 sc)

Rows 3-27: Rep row 2, (once you get to row 27 do not fasten off)

Fold the gift card holder in half length wise and put a stitch marker in each corner (see photo below)

Starting in the left-hand top corner sc down the side, (making sure to crochet through both sides) to the bottom corner, fasten off. (see photos below)


Working in the bottom right-hand corner, attach yarn and sc to the top right-hand corner. (see photos below) do not fasten off.


Working around the top of the gift card holder, ch 1, sl st in each st around the top of the holder (make sure to sl st loosely, do not pull your sl sts too tight), once you reach the beg, ch 15, sl st in the beg sl st. fasten off and weave in ends. (see photos below).


Now you have a completed gift card holder lets decorate it!

Appliques (use cotton dk yarn and 2.5 mm crochet hook)

Christmas balls (make 3) size: 1" (2.54 cm) tall by 3/4" (1.90 cm) wide

Make a magic circle

Rnd 1: ch 2, (does not count as a stitch), 12 dc in the circle, join to beg dc, fasten off. (12 dc)

Top of ball: (RS) join yarn to the last dc made, hdc in the same st as join, hdc in the next st, fasten off, weave in ends. If desired decorate. (2 hdc)


Lights (make 4) size: 1" (2.54 cm) tall by 1/2" (1.27 cm) wide

Make a magic circle

Rnd 1: ch 1, dc, 2 hdc, dc, 2 hdc, dc, in the circle, sl st to the first dc, fasten off. (7 sts)

Top of light (RS): join yarn to the last dc made, sc in same st as join, sc in the next st, fasten off, weave in ends. (2 sc)


Hearts (make 4) 1" (2.54 cm) tall by 1" (2.54 cm) wide

Make a magic circle

Rnd1: ch 1, dc, 2 tr, dc, 4 sc, ch 2, 4 sc, dc, 2 tr, dc, sl st in the circle, fasten off before closing the circle, close the circle, weave in ends. (16 sts, 1 ch-2 sp)


Holly leaves and berries 

Holly leaves (make 4)  size: 1" (2.54 cm) long by 1/2" (1.27 cm) wide

Ch 7 (you will be working on both sides of the ch 7)

Rnd 1: sl st in the first 2 chs, ch 2, sl st in the next 2 chs, ch 2, sl st in the next ch, (ss, ch 1, ss) in the last ch, turn, now working on the other side of the ch, sl st in the first 2 chs,  ch 2, sl st in the next 2 chs, ch 2, sl st in the last 2 chs, fasten off, weave in ends. (12 sl st, 4 ch-2 sps)

Berries (make 5) size: 1/4" (0.63 cm) circumference

Make a magic circle

Rnd 1: 4 sc in the circle, join to beg sc, fasten off, weave in ends. (4 sc)

Notes on adding appliques to the gift card holder:

You can sew down or glue the appliques to the gift card holder. (If you are gluing the appliques down with a glue gun etc..... insert a piece of paper in the gift card holder in case of dripping.
Promptly remove the paper so it does not adhere to the gift card holder. If desired add other embellishments.
