African Flower Ornament

Yarn:
Scheepjes Catona 100% cotton fingering weight yarn, or size 1 or 2 cotton yarn

Materials: US Size E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hooks, yarn needle, scissors.

Difficulty: Easy   

Size: 4 ¼” (10.7 cm) across

Abbreviations and Stitches (U.S. Terms): beg - beginning, ch(s) - chain(s), dc - double crochet, Rnd - round, sc- single crochet, sk – skip, sl st – slip stitch, sp – space, st(s) - stitch(es)

Gauge: Yarn gauge-26 sts x 36 rows = 4” (10.16 cm)

Special stitches: spike sc: see pattern below

Notes: This pattern is written in U.S. Terms

Ch-3 at the beginning of the round counts as a double crochet

Instructions: African Flower Hexagon (make 2)

Make a magic circle

Rnd 1: Ch 3, dc in the circle, ch 1, *2 dc in circle, ch 1; repeat from * 4 more times, fasten off. (12 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 2: Join new yarn to any ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the same sp, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (24 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 3: Join new yarn to any ch-2 sp, ch 3, 6 dc in the same sp, *7 dc in the next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join to beg ch-3, fasten off. (42 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 4: Join new yarn to any dc, sc in each st around to the end of the shell, *spike sc in between each shell, (For spike sc insert your hook into the little sp between the shells of Rnd 3, pull up a loop to the height of your current working Rnd, yarn over, pull through the 2 loops on the hook), sc in each of the next dc; repeat from * around, sc in the remaining dc, join to beg sc, fasten off. (42 sc, 6 spike sc)

Rnd 5: Join a new yarn in the spike st from Rnd 5, ch 3, dc in the next 3 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next st, * dc in the next 7 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next st; repeat from * around, to the last 3 sts, dc in the last 3 sts, join, fasten off. (66 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Weave in ends and for best results block

Joining the African Flower motifs together:

Lay one African Flower motif on top of the other with wrong sides together, making sure to match the ch-2 sps.

Join yarn to any ch-2 sp, (making sure to pick up both motifs), sc in the sp,

now working through the sts of both motifs, sc in the next 9 sts, 

*2 sc in the next ch-2 sp, sc in the next 9 sts; rep from * around, sc in the beg ch-2 sp, do not join, ch 20 (for hanger), 


join to beg sc, fasten off, weave in ends. (66 sc, 1 ch-20 hanger)


And there you have it, an African Flower Ornament!
