Materials: US Size E/4 (3.5 mm) and 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers, tape measure
Difficulty: Easy
Size: 5½” (13.97) wide x 6¼” (15.87 cm) tall
Gauge: 14 sc x 15 rows = 4” (10.16 cm)
Abbreviations and Stitches (U.S. Terms): beg – beginning, ch – chain, dc –
double crochet, hdc – half double crochet, rep – repeat, sc – single crochet,
sl st – slip stitch, st(s) – stitch(es)
Special Stitches: Reverse single crochet (rsc)- insert
hook in the next stitch to the right, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over
and pull through the 2 loops on the hook.
Notes: Ch 3 counts as a stitch
Instructions: Skully granny square (make 2) Each square is 5” (12.7 cm) x 5” (12.7 cm)
Make a Magic circle,
Rnd 1: Using size 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook, Ch 3, 9 dc in the circle, ch 5, dc, ch 3, dc in the circle, ch 5, sl st into the 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (12 dc, 2 ch-5 sps, 1 ch-3 sp)
Rnd 2: Sc in the next 9 sts, 6 sc in the ch-5 sp, (sl st, 4 dc, sl st) in the
ch-3 sp, 6 sc in the next ch-5 sp, join to beg sc, fasten off. (21 sc, 2 sl st,
4 dc)
Rnd 3: Join new yarn to the same st as join, ch 3, work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in
same st as join, corner made, dc in the next st, hdc in the next 4 sts, dc in
the next st, ( 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next st, dc in the next st, hdc in the
next 4 sts, dc in the next st, ( 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next st, dc in the
next st, sc in the next 4 sts, dc in the next st, ( 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the
next st, dc in the next st, hdc in the next 4 sts, join to beg ch-3. (24 dc, 12
hdc, 4 sc)
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in the next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the corner ch-2 sp, *dc
in the next 9 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next corner ch-2 sp; rep from *
around, dc in the last 7 sts, join to beg ch-3. (52 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 5: Sc in the same st as join and in the next 2 sts, ( 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in
the corner ch-2 sp, *sc in the next 12 sts, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in the next
corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, sc in the last 9 sts, join to beg sc, fasten
off. (64 sc, 4 ch-2 sps)
Weave in ends and Block (you will need to block your granny squares to make it easier to join the squares together for pouch.)
Making the Pouch:
Joining squares: with wrong sides together, put a stitch
marker in each of the top corners.
Beginning in the left corner and working through both
granny squares, join yarn, sc in the same sp as join, * sc in the next st and
in each st and ch-1 sp to the next corner, 2 sc in the corner sp; repeat from *
around to the next stitch marker, 2 sc in the corner sp with stitch marker.
(the sp between the stitch markers will be the top of the pouch), remove st
markers.
Working around the top of pouch
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each sp and st around the top of the pouch, join to beg
ch-1. (44 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, sk 1 st, sc in the next st, ch 2: repeat from * around, join to
beg ch-2. (22 ch-2 sps, 22 sc).
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in the next ch-2 sp and in each ch-2 sp around, join to beg
ch-1. (44 sc, 1 ch-1)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join to beg ch-1. (44 sc)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, rsc in each st around, join to beg ch-1, fasten
off, weave in ends. (44 rsc)
Pouch Drawstrings (make 2): Using the E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook, ch
85, fasten off and weave in ends. Weave the tie through the ch-2 sps from Rd 2.
Note: you can also use ribbon, twine or braided cord for a
tie.
Lining You can use the bag as is, or you can add a lining to the bag which will make it sturdier. (The pouches in the first photo are lined.)
